Apparently G misconfigured the signup form with the actual mailserver, so if someone registered eightfivethree@gmail.com first, then they would get mail sent to eight.five.three@gmail.com, even if it was a completely seperate account.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Somewhere on the Gmail help page there was a snippet about it but I can&#039;t find it for the life of me.&lt;/p&gt;
