Windows on a Mac

Apple just announced that in their next major OS release you will be able to run Windows natively. That’s kind of cool, but the reason I have a Mac is for the operating system, not really the hardware, so I don’t imagine I’ll be doing too much Windows on my Intel Mac (when I get one).

iLife ‘06

Rachel and I went to Portland today and stopped by the Apple Store. I really wanted iLife ‘06 so I got it today. I don’t quite know why I wanted it… just had to have it. I got it installed and have played around with it a little so far. I might try and make an iWeb page just for fun.

Flip4Mac’s Windows Media Components for QuickTime

I saw today that Windows Media Components for QuickTime by Flip4Mac is now being released for free by Microsoft. I have only tried it out a little, but it works as advertised. I would recommend that anyone with a Mac download and install this program. It works better than Windows Media Player to play browser embedded videos. First thing I did after getting this installed was head over to Whoomp and watch all the WMV videos I have been missing out on.

Apple Day

The annual Steve Jobs keynote address at Macworld took place today. I tried watching the recorded webcast, but I couldn’t get a good connection, maybe later. The new hardware they announced, MacBook Pro and a new iMac, isn’t all that exciting to me. I actually have the previous versions of both machines and am quite happy. I know the switch to Intel is a good one (faster computers!), but it isn’t forcing me to rush out and get another new computer.

I was really hoping for a DVR-capable computer. Something that could compete with the Windows Media Center. Maybe soon.

I will probably get the new version of iLife, iLive ‘06, sometime soon. iWeb will be a little fun to try out and the new Garageband looks pretty sweet.

The most wonderful time of the year

I haven’t felt much like spending time on my computer lately and thus my lack of weblog posting. Work is going well and I spend all day on the computer there, so by the time I get home I just want to sit on the couch and play Sudoku (and of course watch some television).

Since I last checked in, Rachel’s parents visited us for Thanksgiving. We did just about everything the town had to offer and had a really fun time doing it (with exception to maybe the two-plus hours spent at the holiday market).

One of the local radio stations started playing Christmas music. That’s all I listen to in the car now, of course that means I only get to hear about four Christmas songs a day, but I enjoy them while I can.

The basketball league I am in starts next Sunday with an exhibition game. We aren’t allowed to dunk during the game or warm-ups, oh well.

Enabling Taps

I didn’t realize until tonight that the powerbook trackpad could be tapped to simulate a mouse click and doubleclick. I have used the trackpad-tap feature on PCs before and it came in quite handy, so tonight I spent some time searching the System Preferences and found the trackpad-tap feature.

Under ‘Keyboard & Mouse’ check the ‘Clicking’ box to enable single and double clicks by tapping (or double-tapping) the trackpad.

A Couple New Things

First of all, Firefox RC1 was released today. Among other features, it has the ability to reorder tabs – so cool.

Second, I think just yesterday, del.icio.us introduced a new feature that allows people to create bookmarks ‘for’ other members. This means that if I found a webpage about unicorns that I know my brother-in-law Adam would just love (cause he loves unicorns), I could post the bookmark to del.icio.us ‘for Adam.’ It is a pretty cool feature that I hope doesn’t turn into Bookmark Spam.

I just read today about Stanford on iTunes. This could be huge. I think it is great that Stanford has made some of their content available (for free) and even better that iTunes is providing the means of distribution. Sharing is great.

Webmail Now Available

I have recently started using del.icio.us on a regular basis and have come across a few really cool things on the web. Today I found an AJAX/PHP powered webmail application called RoundCube. I have installed it at http://webmail.gunnerweb.net/. Anyone that wants to use it is more than welcome to. All you need is your account name, password and IMAP server address. If I happen to host your email address all you need to enter is your email address and account password (something I set for you), don’t worry about the server, it defaults to the one you need. I think it is a really cool little app and I can’t wait to play around with it some more; give it that gunnerweb feel.
